Artist Statement
Twice I’ve been challenged to paint a white-on-white stillife, and twice I’ve failed – when I stare at white, I see dissolving color, and where I don’t see color, I vision it. A love of dramatic color and a need for pleasing shape defines my work, yet I am also impelled to animate my paintings, in a literal sense. A painting comes alive for me when there is life in it – a dog, a bird, a grieving girl. Most of my paintings, even the most abstract, started with an eye, a wing, a part of something live and visceral. But from that life I build patterns and overlapping colors that satisfy me and, I hope, others.
